DELTA water treatment technology provides salinity, iron and scale reduction solution

Posted on January 14, 2014

Water problems such as salinity, scale and iron are serious threats to Australia’s fruit, vegetable and wine industries, household gardens plus small and large-scale irrigation enterprises.

These problems come to the fore during every Australian summer, and this summer is no exception with drought biting hard across many parts of inland Australia.

With scant water supplies people are looking to improve the quality of what they have and many are turning to our 100% Australian water treatment technology for a solution.

Demand for our water treatment technology and scale reduction system is especially high this summer.

One of the products attracting the most attention is the DELTA Heavy Duty SL range, released this time last year. The range is custom-made specifically for water that was untreatable in the past due to extremely high mineral and salt content. It can treat water with up to 8000uS/c, Electrical Conductivity (5000ppm salt).

Our Heavy Duty range represents new opportunities in agriculture and industry because it treats water that people were unable to treat because of excessively high mineral and salt content. Customers are reporting no more leaf burn, a boost to plant and crop yields, improvements to soil structure and no more signs of plants going yellow or dying. It’s really exciting to be able to provide a solution to industries who were struggling because of their poor quality water.

DELTA manufactures the Heavy Duty SL range for large-scale enterprises such as mines and large-scale irrigation right through to home gardens. All growers of salt-sensitive plants including small and large-scale fruit and vegetable growers are also tapping into new opportunities thanks to their DELTA-treated water.

Geraldton’s Allen Espinos reckons the only difference between a dead melon and vegetable crop and his now-thriving one is the DELTAwater Solutions water treatment technology.

“It’s doing a brilliant job,” Allen says. “It’s blown me away.”

The grower, who sells at local market stalls, was on the cusp of turning his back on growing crops in 2012. Irrigation supply from nearby Chapman River had dried and water from a bore he then sank was high in minerals and salt and killing his plants.

“There was too much salt and acid in the bore water, it was just shocking,” Allen says. “The first crop I put in was 8000 watermelons and they turned up their toes and within four days the crop was gone. The tomatoes went down as well, turned up their toes too and it took about two weeks for them to die.

DELTA’s local agent checked Allen’s bore supply, reporting it was one of the worst samples he’d tested. Test results showed Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) of 5000 parts per million (ppm). Vegetables can only tolerate up to TDS 500ppm. The chloride levels in the water were 2040ppm. Chloride levels of 100ppm and above cause leaf burn and stunted growth.

“Since installing my DELTA water treatment technology, I’ve got growth in watermelons like never before. The growth is up to 600mm deep and just a mass of vines. It’s just that healthy and, quite simply, it’s the DELTA that’s changed it.”
