DELTAwater solves bore water calcium scale problem

When Ted and Juliana Tomlinson retired to Tamworth off their wheat and sheep farm at Condobolin to Tamworth, they wanted a big garden and space around them.

They built on a block on the Sydney side of Australia’s country music capital and installed a bore to water their extensive lawn and garden area.

The problem was, the mineral content of the bore was so high that the water left white scum on their plants, stunted plant growth and blocked their pop-up sprinklers, pipes and taps.

Nine years ago, at the recommendation of Blooms Irrigation who they purchased their sprinkler system from, they contacted Australian water treatment company DELTAwater solutions.

Based in Newcastle, DELTAwater solutions has been manufacturing customised water treatment systems for 30 years to address salinity, scale build-up, water hardness, iron and corrosion problems.

Ted and Juliana use their bore water on two acres of lawn which is watered with a sprinkler system of around 90 pop-ups, in a greenhouse and other garden areas.

After getting DELTAwater to test their water, they installed the recommended Grade 14, 25mm unit which worked well for several years. As the region came into drought conditions, impacting on the mineral levels in the bore, the calcium problems returned.

“It had worked well from the beginning but then it seemed it wasn’t quite doing the job, so I got straight onto DELTA.”

This was in 2016. DELTAwater upgraded the unit to a Grade 20 and Ted says they haven’t had a single problem since.

Ted recommended DELTAwater solutions to a keen gardening friend who lives on the other side of Tamworth and he has experienced the same results.

“He’s pretty happy, and so are we. It’s fixed the calcium problem, got rid of the white scum on our leaves and we haven’t had once single blockage in our sprinkler system since the DELTA.”

Ted says another way they know the DELTA is doing its job is by comparing the water that goes through the conditioner with water in a reticulated pond.

“This pond has a recirculation system which means it doesn’t pass through the DELTA. It’s the same water from the bore that the rest of the garden gets, and we have to clean out those pipes and use acid in the lines to get the calcium out.

“This just shows you how effective the DELTA treatment is for the rest of our watering system. It’s definitely doing its job!”

Another improvement they noticed was in plant growth and health, which was especially noticeable in their green house.

“In our green house the plants were really struggling to grow. They were stunted and the bore water was really holding them back. After we installed our DELTA, they started growing a lot more and are a lot healthier.”
